|The Barbara Mathes Gallery was founded in 1978 and specializes in European and American paintings, drawings, and sculpture. We have a particular emphasis on American Modernism, 20th Century American and European Works on Paper, Sculpture, the work of Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter and William Turnbull. |
The philosophy of the gallery is a highly personal one. There is an emphasis on visual relationships between modern and contemporary art. Our well-edited inventory offers our clients a continual source of quality works on view. The gallery is well known for its seriousness and individual attention. We provide our clients with complete documentation including exhibition history, provenance, letters of authenticity, literary references, market history, condition reports, insurance valuations, and transparencies on every work in our inventory. Each sale is accompanied by a complete dossier.
Curatorial and appraisal services are available to our clients. We will research, check condition, advise on purchase price, and bid at auction for private individuals, institutions and corporations. Framing and installation advice is also offered.
We work closely with clients on conceptualizing and building specific collections or acquiring a particular work of art. Our experience and resources enable us to find appropriate works in the marketplace or within our own inventory. Additionally, we can assist in the de-accession of works of art.
The gallery is well known for its varied exhibition program which reflects a wide range of 20th century ideas. Exhibitions have included art historical movements or figures, a single artist, or an imaginative juxtaposition of the modern and contemporary exploring thematic or stylistic subjects. The gallery has also instituted a series of "Alternative Visions"; exhibitions which look at earlier and different art forms either alone or in relation to an aspect of the 20th century. These exhibitions have provided our clients with discoveries about broadening the range of collecting. Our emphasis on a contextual point of view between historical and contemporary, provide stimulating and exciting visual relationships.
We have placed important works in major private and public collections including the Albright Knox Gallery, Amon Carter Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Hirshorn Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Palace of the Legion of Honor, Reina Sofia Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art and others.
