Nigel Ross
Nigel Ross wood sculptor
Nigel Ross´s art developed naturally from a life working with trees.
Starting from the parks of London where he learned the skills of tree surgery, to the hills of Arran in Scotland, he spent over ten years on the island, fencing, planting and harvesting trees as a forest contractor.
Ross is a self-taught sculptor using who now uses his chainsaw as his carving tool.
Tree trunks are saved from planking and logging and sculpted into large abstract organic forms. With landscape and nature major influences the sculptor attempts to harness the energy and strength of the tree.
Much of Ross´s work is sculptural seating and is now sited across Britain. Fallen trees are often carved on site and with the chainsaw a large sculpture can be created in a few days.
Commissions have been undertaken from the Highlands to Hastings and Legoland to Lochlomond.
He has completed two residencies at Grizedale Forest Sculpture Park and worked at many country side parks and stately homes.
In 1999 and 2000 Ross has been involved in several projects in Austria and has been commissioned by Hospitals in Devon & Sussex.
The artist is now living in Perthshire.
