Neo-Romanticism

Neo-Romanticism is a term that applies to two separate artistic styles of the 20 th century. The first of this style began in France in the 1930's and was characterized with themes of poverty done in warped perspectives to give them an idealized air of drama and tragedy. All of the images are taken from city scenes and real-world reality, but are then composed in such a way as to pervert them out of context. The second group began in Britain in the late 30's and early 40's as some of the British painters wanted a return to the traditionally romantic themes and techniques. This group was comprised of Piper, Sutherland, Aerton and Minton .
